Linen, precious as the future

A flax field in Astino: after more than 60 years, a dream come true.

The dream of seeing a plantation of flax in full flourish in Italy, in the heart of Astino’s Valley of Biodiversity, close to its own spinning mill at Villa d’Almè, a center of excellence where the finest linen yarns in the world are made. The aspiration to become true ambassadors and promoters of the culture of linen, the world’s earliest textile fibre.

Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale had a dream, and took on an ambitious challenge.

International leader in the high sustainablity production of haut de gamme linen yarns, Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale boasts a historical vocation, shaped by profound respect for tradition and at the same time committed  orientation towards the future, creativity and the search for perfection starting from raw materials. Unique savoir-faire that is attentive to sustainability, which today after more than sixty years has led to the successful resumption of linen cultivation in Italy, in Bergamo. The Valley of Biodiversity takes its name from the former Monastery of Astino, founded in 1107 and restored in 2015, and today an active center of Bergamo’s cultural life.

Linen from Astino. A limited edition thread at km-zero.

In March 2018, Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale sowed two hectares of its prestigious linen within the exclusive agricultural area of Astino: this is where 100% Made in Italy and zero-km thread in limited edition was created for the highest quality fabrics for premium shirt tailors and high-end fashion companies as per @Cotonificio Albini. For upholstery on the other hand, the fabric has been exclusively ceded to Martinelli Ginetto for the creation of fine fabrics for the home.

“ Throughout its history, the company has always had a “circular” relationship with the land, following the intuition and guidance of enlightened men of the past such as Adriano Olivetti, Gaetano Marzotto and Andrea Ponti, our founding father. This is the perspective we intend to maintain, and it is the reason why today we want to give the territory, with this field of linen, a touch of magic, an emotion and its own memory. ”
~ Pierluigi Fusco Girard – A.D. Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale
