Traceability: a sustainable choice

As also emerged at the Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum, in October 2023, traceability is one of the most important elements that can help fashion textiles in the transition towards a more sustainable industry.
Traceability is the ability to trace all processes, from raw material sourcing to production, consumption, and disposal, to know ‘when and where the product was produced and by whom’. In particular, traceability in the textile sector is essential to monitor and document the various stages of production, ensuring transparency on the supply chain and the environmental and social impact of textile products.

Thanks to the collaboration with Terre de Lin, a cooperative specialized in the cultivation and processing of linen for textiles, Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale has been tracking its products with blockchain technology since 2021. Beginning with the yarn 1873 – The Ould Linen and Lino d’Italia, the company guarantees a transparent and monitorable production chain, from the field to the finished product (with the possibility of continuing all the way to the article on sale in the shop or online).

Product traceability is customers guarantee (and consequently for the entire chain, up to the end consumer) that the yarn has been produced in a responsible and sustainable manner, without exploitative practices or inducing environmental damage, thanks to a detailed information flow for each stage (which can also be implemented in subsequent ones). The information is accessible via a visible Qr-code placed on the finished product.

In addition, this initiative could positively influence the entire supply chain, prompting other companies to suit and commit to low-impact and transparent practices: a strong and concrete message for an increasingly aware and responsible sector, which also contributes to raising sustainability standards.
